Brief Biography

An original Canterbury pioneer, arriving there from Scotland in the early 1880's. Settled in Rotorua in August 1911, where he commenced business as a Furniture Store and Land Agent. Became a very prominent worker of the St John's Presbyterian Church, and was a Superintendent of St John's Sunday School. 

Took an active part in the affairs of Rotorua Chamber of Commerce, including negotiations with the Government prior to the passing of the Rotorua Town Land Act, which gave the residents the right of freeholding land. Was elected the first President of the Rotorua Rotary Club. Served a term as District representative on the Tauranga Harbour Board. Elected to the Rotorua Borough Council in 1923, and succeeded Mr C. H. Clinkard as Mayor in 1927. He died in Rotorua whilst Mayor in 1928. A grandson, Mr Gordon McDowell, served a term as Councillor from 1953 to 1956 and is in business in Rotorua.
