Rotorua Personality

Born at Ruakaka in 1868.

Trained as a builder, then abandoned building to go back to farming with his family. Later he took up building again when the goldfields were opened at Karangahake, near Waihi. He moved to Rotorua in 1898 to build the Power House at Okere Falls, then stayed in Rotorua as a building contractor. One of his last buildings was Thirwell House (Boarding House) c1900. He then went into business as a land agent.  He was a founding member of the Rotorua Bowling Club and of the A & P Association, and was also a Justice of the Peace. Mr Sloane died in Rotorua aged 86 on 1 April 1954. He is buried in the Sala Street Cemetary.
