Early Rotorua Settler 1906-1939

Mr Louis Woolliams was born in Wallingford England c1870 and moved to New Zealand c1892 he married Miss Annie Brown in 1900, they were living in Kimbolton where Mr Woolliams was manager of a boarding house.

"They moved to Rotorua in 1906 with their 4 children (William, Joseph, Mary and Leslie, another daughter Annie was born in Rotorua in 1913). At this time Mr Woolliams took over a well-known private hotel Thirwell House which he managed till 1909 when he had The Mansions private hotel built and which he then ran successfully till his retirement in 1919. In 1923 he was appointed one of the Government Representatives on the Rotorua Borough Council and had that position unitl 1928 when he resigned. In 1933 he was returned as an elected member and remained on the Council until his death in July 1939. During his time on Council he was involved in the beautification of the town and was also involved in the establishment of the Municipal Camping Ground."
