This building was the Rotorua Police Station from 1940 to 1969, Architect was John Mair.

At the top of the building there is a frieze of Maori motifs. To see a front view of the original Police Station, look at the City Celebration issue of the Daily Post 25 January 1963 in the Don Stafford Room of the Rotorua District Library on the 2nd floor.

A memory from one Ngamaru Raerino who was one of Rotorua's just 2 police officers, worked in this building when it was the Police Station. He remembers the move on to the 'new' Police Station and working the first shift in the new watchhouse.
