"One of the earliest surviving commercial buildings and was the most substantial when built in 1920 and is built of pumice concrete. It has associations with the Chandler family. George Chandler was a prominent businessman in the earlier decades of Rotorua township's development. Mary Kate Chandler also built the adjacent Grosvenor Flats, Beale's Grocery and Beale's Garage." from Rotorua CBD Built Heritage Study
The Bank of Australasia ("The Asia") occupied this building until 1928 when the bank was relocated to cnr Hinemoa & Tutanekai Streets to a new concrete building with Managers residence attached. See Don Stafford File, Commerce Folder for a history of the bank in Rotorua.

The downstairs part of this building was used by a Christian Youth Group "Focus" from Fenton Park Bible Church as a drop in centre in the 1980s where a free coffee and a warm place to sit on a Friday night was available for several years.
