The old Nurses Home attached to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital was transformed into a resthome for the elderly in 1986. It is to be demolished by 2016 to make way for a new holiday resort. Whare Aroha will then move to their new site in Taui Street, Ngongotaha.
Excerpt from Daily Post 13 Dec 2014:
"Whare Aroha CARE bought a 1.3ha site in Taui St to build the village for up to 80 people. It will include a lakeside promenade, supermarket and cafe.
Design inspired by an acclaimed Dutch dementia village De Hogeweyk will signal a change in approach to the care of the elderly."
