One of the many Guest Houses, Rotorua boasted about in the early days

Excerpt from 'Bay of Plenty Times, 16 December 1910 courtesy of Papers Past

"Tauranga and Te Puke residents visiting Rotorua will be interested to know that they can now secure the best of accommodation and every comfort at "Armidale" which has recently been opened by Mrs C. Willmott. This boardinghouse is situated in Amohia Street, and in close proximity to the railway station and baths. Visitors from the western Bay of Plenty will not be regarded as strangers at "Armidale" and whether travelling through or staying in the Thermal district for a holiday they may always rest assured of a hearty welcome"

This is the first time the "Armidale" appeared in a newspaper that we can find online. There may be more information available from newspapers of the era not yet digitised.

On the 26th of May 1924 this original boardinghouse was burnt down, the then owner Mrs Carkeek and Manager Mrs E.H. Aston along with some guests were rescued and some of their belongings also. The Bay of Plenty Times also states that the cottage adjoining owned by Mr W.E. Bennett and occupied by Mr T. S. Parata was burned down as well, but "the Brigade made an excellent save of the nearby building, Hamilton House, with blankets and sacks wetted from the street channels. Heavy rain fell during the fire.  This article was used by Don Stafford when writing his book "The New Century in Rotorua" and can be read in it's entirety from Don's notes.

In Don Stafford's research folders held by the Rotorua District Library there are two references to this boarding house.  If anyone can remember this boarding house and/or have photographs to share please email us through the Kete Rotorua link.
