According to The Auckland Star, 10 November 1936 the memorial was severely damaged by vandals who destroyed the statue of Rangitihi who once guarded the memorial. The Rotorua Morning Post, 12 November 1936, records it as the work of 'irresponsible larrikins' and goes on to lament the coverage of this event in the Auckland Star conveying an image of the Rotorua Gardens as being an unsafe place to visit and by reporting it as such the Star had damaged the tourist view of Rotorua.
