Topic: Dumped Army equipment

Topic type:

It is supposed that after WWII the army dumped tonnes of unwanted gear including jeeps and guns into one or more Rotorua Lakes.

Don Stafford told Library staff in 2003 that about 40 years earlier he had been driven around by someone who said in passing that army gear had been dumped into the small lake. The lake was a small one, accessed off a forestry track that led off the road to the Waiotapu camp. Don thought the lake was south of rainbow Mountain but he didn't know its name.

The person who made the enquiry at the Library in 2003 had been told by a kaumatua that army gear had been dumped in Lake Rerewhakaaitu.

Another source reported that it was Lake Okaro.
