Topic: Royal visit 1901

Topic type:

Guide Maggie (Makereti) Papakura's memories of the visit to Rotorua of the Prince and Princess of Wales in June 1901

The pages below are from a booklet published by the Brett Printing and Publishing Company in 1905, Maggie's Guide to the Hot Lakes District and some Maori legends, by Maggie Papakura. There is an article in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography on Te Ara about Guide Maggie, who was also known as Makereti. She was born Margaret Pattison Thom, at Matata in the Bay of Plenty, on 20 October 1873.  A preface to the booklet says it "has been written entirely by herself, and is presented without embellishment." The Library's copy of the booklet was donated by Don Stafford and is signed by Maggie herself.  Maggie's guide to the Hot Lakes, p 82
