St Michaels Church c 1895  "...When Father Becker arrived in Rotorua, there was neither a priest's house nor church. With Maori help he constructed a raupo dwelling place... later he was told there was land belonging to the church, but he was never able to pinpoint it because there was considerable difficulty in locating both the sections and the documents relating to them. Finally he was offered the one and only freehold section in the area, the present site of St Michael's" 

"Opened by his Lordship, John Edmond Luck, Bishop of the Diocese from Auckland on 27th July 1890." Bay of Plenty Times Monday 04/08/1890.

"On 27th July 1890, the church was blessed and dedicated to St Michael by Bishop Luck, assisted by Rev. Fathers Becker, Holierhook and Smiers. A congregation of 200 Maori and European witnessed the ceremony"... from '100 years, Catholic education in Rotorua, 1903-2003' page 3.
