Te Wairoa, widely known as the Buried Village, was once the lovely site of a large native village and the starting point for parties of tourists on their way to see the Pink and White Terraces and enjoy the warm pools .

It was thought that the Terraces were destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Tarawera on 10 June 1886 which buried the village and surrounding districts under a layer of volcanic ash and mud. The Buried Village  has been excavated and is a snapshot of colonial life in New Zealand.

GNS has a blog about the rediscovery of remnants of both Terraces at http://juliansrockandiceblog.blogspot.co.nz/2011/06/white-terraces-reappear-after-125-years.html
