Planted by Rev. F. Spencer in 1887 the tree was lit up every christmas until 1982, then the tree had to be cut down for safety reasons on 1st December 1985.
The Daily Post records the history of the tree with an article by Phil Andrews on page 18 of 13 November 1993.
A photograph of the tree appeared in the New Zealand Women's Weekly, 12 December 1966.

I remember this tree as always being on Fenton Street in front of the new Tourism office, close to the road. It was a beautiful tall tree that I was in awe of as a child.
