Topic: Bible in Schools, a brief history

Topic type:

Also known as Religious Education in State Schools

"The Bible in Schools Movement began in Nelson in 1897 when primary schools agreed to dedicate half an hour each week to the teaching of Bible Stories. Today school boards of trustees decide whether to have religious education, based on what students parents want." Daily Post, 22 November 1997, p3.

Today there are two organisations that offer Bible in Schools education in Rotorua, both are members of the Churches Education Commission.

One is the traditional 'Bible in Schools' programme and the other is called Go Bananas (Once an offshoot of Cool Bananas) this involves a team approach with puppets, drama, singing, bible verse memorization and lot's more.
