"Rotorua's first school was situated on the Te Paenga Tau Maro Peninsula on Lake Rotoiti, opened in 1871 on a 20-acre site agreed to be Captain Gilbert Mair. In 1886 the school was burn't down and lessons resumed at a hall in Taheke. A school was built there in 1890 but it closed two years later. There was no school for four years till the Taheke building was shifted to Te Ngae 'Renana'.  In 1926 Renana closed when Whangamarino and Rotokawa Schools were opened."
